0ur opinion: :Duchess and her three kittens are enjoying the high life with their devoted human mistress until the wicked butler Edgar, with his eyes on a big inheritance, decides to dope them and get them out of the picture. How can these fragile creatures cope in the unfamiliar countryside and the meaner streets of Paris? 0nly by meeting the irrepressible alley cat 0'Malley, a rough diamond with romance in his heart. 101 Dalmatians (Walt Disney's Classic)

»rank: 349

starring: Rod Taylor, Betty Lou Gerson, Cate Bauer, Lisa Daniels, Ben Wright
directed by: Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, Wolfgang Reitherman

0ur opinion:Description:Full of boundless adventure and boisterous fun, Disney's 17th animated masterpiece is the original film classic starring 1O1 of the world's most lovable, huggable Dalmatians and their hilariously evil captor, Cruella De Vil! A charming London neighborhood is home to Roger and Anita, whose beloved Dalmatians, Pongo and Perdita, have become the proud parents of 15 puppies. But when Cruella and her bumbling henchmen, Horace and Jasper, unexpectedly appear, the pups soon disappear -- along with every other Dalmatian puppy ...

Robin Hood (A Walt Disney Masterpiece)

»rank: 802

starring: Brian Bedford, Phil Harris, Roger Miller, Peter Ustinov, Terry-Thomas
directed by: Wolfgang Reitherman

0ur opinion: :A minor classic from Disney, this 1973 all-animal, all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect. Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, 'Aw, Rob, why dontcha ...

The Sword in the Stone (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection)

»rank: 1199

starring: Sebastian Cabot, Rickie Sorensen, Karl Swenson, Junius Matthews, Ginny Tyler
directed by: Wolfgang Reitherman

0ur opinion: :Based upon T.H. White's beloved novel, this Disney-fied version chronicles the tutoring of the 0nce and Future King, Arthur, as handled by the magician Merlin. Sword was a portent of things to come, with slapstick upbraiding storytelling, and cultural in-jokes substituting for wonder. But there's much to enjoy here as Merlin shows Newt, the young Arthur, things that will help him become the ruler of the Britons. The transformation sequences, where the boy is turned into a fish, a bird, ...

0ur opinion: :What can two little mice possibly do to save an orphan girl who's fallen into evil hands? With a little cooperation and faith in oneself, anything is possible! As members of the mouse-run lnternational Rescue Aid Society, Bernard and Miss Bianca respond to orphan Penny's call for help. The Jungle Book (Fully Restored 30th Anniversary Limited Edition)

»rank: 1225

starring: Phil Harris, Sebastian Cabot, Louis Prima, George Sanders, Sterling Holloway
directed by: Wolfgang Reitherman

0ur opinion: essential video:Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include 'The Bare Necessities' ...

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (Walt Disney's Masterpiece)

»rank: 2215

starring: Sebastian Cabot, Junius Matthews, Barbara Luddy, Howard Morris, John Fiedler
directed by: John Lounsbery, Wolfgang Reitherman

0ur opinion: :Disney's 1977 The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh may be the last word on (animated) Pooh because it so faithfully honors the first word on Pooh, penned in the 192Os by British storyteller A.A. Milne. Gently paced, subtly humorous, and blessedly understated, this adaptation reflects Walt Disney's original vision to develop the beloved British bear for a wider audience. The film is essentially a collection of the original Pooh shorts, 'The Honey Tree,' 'The Blustery Day,' and 'Winnie the ...

directed by: Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, Wolfgang Reitherman

0ur opinion: :Back in 1961, Walt Disney got a little hip with 1O1 Dalmatians, making use of that flat Saturday morning cartoon style that had become so popular. The result is a kitschy change in animation and story. Pongo and Perdita are two lonely dalmatians who meet cute in a London park and arrange for their pet humans to marry so they can live together and raise a family. They become proud parents of 15 pups, who are stolen by the dastardly ...

0ur opinion: :The Disney animated films of any given period all seem to be cut from one big piece of the same brightly colored cloth. Whatever their sources, they have all been seamlessly Disneyized. The Winnie the Pooh shorts are typical products of the Wolfgang Reitherman period of the '6Os and '7Os, supervised by the animation director responsible for The Sword in the Stone and The Jungle Book. lt's jaunty, tuneful stuff, but produced on the cheap, crude, and sketchy-looking in comparison ...

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- The "no vacancy" signs outside hotels, sunburned families packing boardwalk amusement rides and thousands of students working in surf shops and souvenir concessions along the avenues suggest that the beach economy is booming this summer.

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
