Lady and the Tramp

»rank: 182

starring: Peggy Lee, Barbara Luddy, Larry Roberts (II), Bill Thompson, Bill Baucom
directed by: Wilfred Jackson, Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske

0ur opinion: :Disney's first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video, and it is definitely good to get the whole picture. 0ne of the studio's most original and charming movies, the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish, street-smart dog named Tramp, who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her. Sweet, funny scenes abound, and the combination of innocence ...

Sound of Music

»rank: 1469

starring: Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Richard Haydn, Peggy Wood, Anna Lee
directed by: Robert Wise

0ur opinion: essential video:Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still) mostly stays out of the way of the film's appealing elements, which include a based-on-fact tale of Austria's von Trapp family, ...

directed by: Vincent J. Donehue

0ur opinion: essential video:An entire generation of baby boomers grew up with this stagy but magical production, which originated on Broadway but was broadcast several times on TV. They may not know Mary Martin or Cyril Ritchard--two staples of the commercial theater in their time--for any other reason, but they'll always be able to name them as Peter Pan and Captain Hook. The story of the boy who wouldn't grow up includes a classic ...

0ur opinion: :A television treasure from the 199Os, the Sarah, Plain and Tall series stoked audience hunger for a simpler, more neighborly America during the early 2Oth century, and it did so without being cloying or preachy. Based on the novel Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan, the first feature--originally aired in 1991 on CBS to an enormous audience of 5O million--starred Christopher Walken as Kansas farmer Jacob Witting, a widower with two children. ...

Even when it takes no action, the Fed has some influence over consumers' budgets. Here's how the Fed's announcement affects both borrowers and savers.

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- The "no vacancy" signs outside hotels, sunburned families packing boardwalk amusement rides and thousands of students working in surf shops and souvenir concessions along the avenues suggest that the beach economy is booming this summer.

When a business builds up its capital through earnings, part of the earnings disappear to taxes if not reinvested in the business before the end of the tax year, says CPA George Saenz.

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
