In Harm's Way

In Harm's Way

»rank: 318

starring: John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Patricia Neal, Tom Tryon, Paula Prentiss
directed by: Otto Preminger

0ur opinion: essential video:0tto Preminger's sprawling World War ll drama packs a lot into its 165 minutes, beginning with the attack on Pearl Harbor (which Preminger re-creates in amazing detail) and ending a couple of years later with America's return to the South Pacific in force. John Wayne and Kirk Douglas star as a career naval captain and his self-pitying commander in the peacetime navy who are thrust into battle when Pearl Harbor ...

Anatomy of a Murder

Anatomy of a Murder

»rank: 153

starring: James Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, Arthur O'Connell, Eve Arden
directed by: Otto Preminger

0ur opinion: essential video:0tto Preminger turned this 1959 courtroom drama, based on the popular novel, into terrific adult drama. James Stewart stars as a small-town lawyer who defends an army officer (Ben Gazzara) accused of murdering a bartender who assaulted his wife (Lee Remick). The taut script, large performance by Stewart, and then-daring elements of the story (words like 'panties' are spoken in the context of discussing a sex crime) give the action ...

Laura (1944)

»rank: 3933

starring: Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, Vincent Price, Judith Anderson
directed by: Rouben Mamoulian, Otto Preminger

0ur opinion: essential video:This silky smooth film noir pits gruff police detective Dana Andrews, stiff and blunt in his street-bred manners, against a cultured columnist and acidic wit (Clifton Webb at his prissiest) in a battle of wits during a murder investigation. The cop is a romantic hiding under a hard-boiled exterior who falls in love with the beautiful victim through the portrait that hangs in her apartment. Gene Tierney, whose heart-shaped face ...

Carmen Jones

»rank: 6013

starring: Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte, Olga James, Pearl Bailey, Joe Adams (IV)
directed by: Otto Preminger

0ur opinion: essential video:Few actresses have captivated the camera as powerfully as Dorothy Dandridge in Carmen Jones. Her polished beauty plays in irresistible contrast to her title character's leonine sexuality and fluid emotions; a man can't decide from moment to moment if he wants to save her from doom, build her a castle, or never let her out of bed. 0f course, that's the problem with the boys in this semi-experimental adaptation of ...

The Moon Is Blue

»rank: 12836

starring: William Holden, David Niven, Maggie McNamara, Tom Tully, Dawn Addams
directed by: Otto Preminger

0ur opinion: essential video:More famous as a controversy than a movie, The Moon ls Blue (1953) marked a turning point in the history of frankness in American film. Because producer-director 0tto Preminger owned the rights to the hit Broadway play, he stubbornly refused to change the racy dialogue in the script. The offending words included such end-of-western-civilization-as-we-know-it terms as 'virgin' and 'pregnant.' The Production Code withheld its seal, the Catholic Legion of Decency ...

directed by: Jean Negulesco, Otto Preminger

0ur opinion: :Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe are abandoned by a bad guy (Rory Calhoun) who steals Mitchum's horse, forcing them to travel down a raging river (along with Mitchum's son) on a raft. The three refugees, all of them living troubled lives to begin with, have to face the rapids together, and director 0tto Preminger's allegory for individual salvation through unity becomes a stirring family drama. This 1954 film features Monroe at her ...

directed by: Otto Preminger

0ur opinion: essential video:Cool and introspective, 0tto Preminger's sleek, stylish Bonjour Tristesse is one of his most understated films. Jean Seberg stars as a spoiled teenager who acts with a high-society sophistication beyond her years, and dapper David Niven is her playboy father, going through young female playmates like socks. Flitting through the French jet set and comparing conquests, they summer on the gorgeous French Riviera, where mature fashion designer Deborah Kerr enters ...

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
