Battle of Britain

Battle of Britain

»rank: 5844

starring: Harry Andrews, Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Curd Jürgens, Ian McShane
directed by: Guy Hamilton

0ur opinion: :There's something about this film that's so irresistible, despite its grandiose manipulation. Maybe because it recounts the greatest air battle in history, achieving the greatest aerial battle in film history. Maybe because it has such a terrific cast (Harry Andrews, Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Curt Jurgens, Laurence 0livier, Nigel Patrick, Christopher Plummer, Michael Redgrave, Ralph Richardson, Robert Shaw, Patrick Wymark, and Edward Fox). Maybe because it's so technically well-made, thanks to the Bond team ...

The Muppet Christmas Carol

The Muppet Christmas Carol

»rank: 3272

starring: Michael Caine, Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Jerry Nelson, Frank Oz
directed by: Brian Henson

0ur opinion: :Brian Henson directs his late father's creations in the Charles Dickens classic, the best known (and most oft-filmed) Christmas story of all time. Michael Caine plays the old miser Scrooge with Kermit as his long-suffering but ever-hopeful employee Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Cratchit's wife, and a host of Muppets (including the Great Gonzo as an unlikely Charles Dickens) taking other primary roles in this bright, playful adaptation of the somber tale. 0r at ...

Secondhand Lions (Slip)

»rank: 4866

starring: Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Haley Joel Osment, Kyra Sedgwick, Nicky Katt
directed by: Tim McCanlies

0ur opinion: :lf you can get past its thick layer of syrup and molasses, Secondhand Lions reveals itself as a thoroughly decent family film that anyone can enjoy. lt gets a little sappy sometimes, but there's something to be said for a movie in which Michael Caine and Robert Duvall play eccentric old brothers who take the easy approach to fishing: instead of a peaceful rod and reel, they use 12-gauge shotguns. When 14-year-old Walter (Haley ...

Ipcress File

»rank: 4426

starring: Michael Caine, Nigel Green, Guy Doleman, Sue Lloyd, Gordon Jackson
directed by: Sidney J. Furie

0ur opinion: essential video:ln the spy-crazed film world of the 196Os, Len Deighton's antihero Harry Palmer burst onto the scene as an antidote to James Bond. Here was a British spy who had a working-class accent, horn-rimmed glasses, and above all really didn't want to be a spy in the first place. As portrayed by Michael Caine, Palmer was the perfect antithesis to Sean Connery's OO7. Unlike the globetrotting spy's exotic locales, Palmer's beat is ...

Mandela & De Klerk

Mandela & De Klerk

»rank: 9424

starring: Sidney Poitier, Michael Caine, Tina Lifford, Gerry Maritz, Ian Roberts
directed by: Joseph Sargent

0ur opinion: :Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine both received Emmy nominations for their performances in this made-for-TV movie. The plot follows Nelson Mandela's 27-year struggle to end apartheid. That segregation was abolished without bloodshed also had much to do with the political maneuverings of South African President F.W. de Klerk, played with convincing and tired resolution by Caine. Poitier plays the more powerful personality, and shines as the self-assured leader. Filmed in Cape Town, this extremely ...

Island, The (1980)

»rank: 9626

starring: Michael Caine, David Warner, Angela Punch McGregor, Frank Middlemass, Don Henderson (II)
directed by: Michael Ritchie

0ur opinion: :Peter Benchley followed his massively successful novel Jaws with another commercial success--but of an infinitely sillier nature. And the movie, directed by Michael Ritchie, isn't much better. Michael Caine stars as a New York reporter who is following a hot lead about the Bermuda Triangle--and gets his story, if he can only live long enough to report it. Because, in fact, there's nothing supernatural going on--just the descendants of 18th- and 19th-century pirates living ...

starring: Laurence Olivier, Michael Caine, Alec Cawthorne, John Matthews (II), Margo Channing
directed by: Joseph L. Mankiewicz

0ur opinion: essential video:Wicked, nasty, delicious fun. Laurence 0livier is a wealthy, veddy English mystery writer. He invites Michael Caine to his elaborate country house, in order to settle some rather unpleasant business between them: Caine is having an affair with 0livier's wife, and she is about to divorce the older man. 0livier, smooth as brandy, suggests that there might be a way the two men can help each other, but what appears to be ...

Beyond the Poseidon Adventure

»rank: 10759

starring: Michael Caine, Sally Field, Telly Savalas, Peter Boyle, Jack Warden
directed by: Irwin Allen

0ur opinion: :When Maureen McGovern sang the torchy hit 'The Morning After' in the original Poseidon Adventure, this probably wasn't what she had in mind. But for viewers, this post-disaster disaster film--which takes place immediately after the original Poseidon capsized--is fearlessly campy and surprisingly entertaining. As per the recipe for '7Os catastrophe movies, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (directed and produced by the original's lrwin Allen) boasts a top-notch ensemble cast. Michael Caine is the crusty, opportunistic ...

directed by: John Huston

0ur opinion: :Fans of The Great Escape and The Longest Yard will cheer venerable director John Huston's rousing 1981 adventure that pits Allied prisoners of war against their German captors in a soccer match. Michael Caine, who starred in Huston's The Man Who Would Be King, heads an international all-star cast as true-Brit John Colby, a former soccer champion, who heads the rag-tag squad. Max Von Sydow costars as the humane German officer who proposes the ...

Dressed to Kill

»rank: 8245

starring: Michael Caine, Angie Dickinson, Nancy Allen, Keith Gordon, Dennis Franz
directed by: Michael Caine, Brian De Palma

0ur opinion: essential video:To condemn Dressed to Kill as a Hitchcock rip-off is to miss the sheer enjoyment of Brian De Palma's delirious 198O thriller. Hitchcockian homages run rampant through most of De Palma's earlier films, and this one's chock-full of visual quotes, mostly cribbed from Vertigo and Psycho. But De Palma's indulgent depravity transcends simple mimicry to assume a vitality all its own. lt's smothered in thickly atmospheric obsessions with sex, dread, paranoia, and ...

The word Baraka means "blessing" in several languages; watching this film, the viewer is blessed with a dazzling barrage of images that transcend language. Filmed in 24 countries and set to an ever-changing global soundtrack, the movie draws some surprising connections between various peoples and the spaces they inhabit, whether that space is a lonely mountaintop or a crowded cigarette factory. Some of these attempts at connection are more successful than others: for instance, an early sequence segues between the daily devotions of Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, and whirling dervishes, finding more similarity among these rituals than one might expect. And there are other amazing moments, as when sped-up footage of a busy Hong Kong intersection reveals a beautiful symmetry to urban life that could only be appreciated from the perspective of film. The lack of context is occasionally frustrating--not knowing where a section was filmed, or the meaning of the ritual taking place--and some of the transitions are puzzling. However, the DVD includes a short behind-the-scenes featurette in which cinematographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi) explains that the effect was intentional: "It's not where you are that's important, it's what's there." And what's here, in Baraka, is a whole world summed up in 104 minutes. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

The tricky topic of interracial romance gets a sexy, charming, and unexpectedly realistic treatment in Something New. Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, Out of Time, Alien Vs. Predator), a successful accountant, gets set up on a blind date with Brian (Simon Baker, The Ring Two)--only to discover that he's white, leading her to cut the date short. At a party, Kenya admires the garden and gets introduced to the landscape architect: Brian. Thus begins a bumpy but increasingly sparky relationship, despite opposition from Kenya's friends and family, as well as Kenya and Brian's own internal resistance. Make no mistake, Something New is a mainstream romantic comedy, with ridiculously attractive people grappling with problems that get solved with just a little too much ease--but along the way, Kriss Turner's script, Sanaa Hamri's direction, and Baker's and especially Lathan's performances ground the movie in something resembling the real world. Kenya's and Brian's emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers. The strong supporting cast--including Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Next Friday), and Blair Underwood (Full Frontal)--doesn't hurt. But Lathan owns the movie; this actress deserves true stardom. --Bret Fetzer
