101 Dalmatians

101 Dalmatians

»rank: 1057

starring: Glenn Close, Jeff Daniels, Joely Richardson, Joan Plowright, Hugh Laurie
directed by: Stephen Herek

0ur opinion: essential video:lt's hard to know who thought it would be a good idea to make a live-action version of Disney's animated classic. The one bright notion anyone had was casting Glenn Close as Disney über-villainess Cruella de Vil; her flashing eyes and angular features are a perfect match and do credit to what is one of the most indelible animated characters Disney has ever created. The story remains essentially the same, ...

Shining Through

Shining Through

»rank: 2595

starring: Michael Douglas, Melanie Griffith, Liam Neeson, Joely Richardson, John Gielgud
directed by: David Seltzer

0ur opinion: :Uncomfortably close to Ben Hecht and Alfred Hitchcock's film Notorious, this World War ll drama (based on a novel by Susan lsaacs) concerns a love affair between a spy (Michael Douglas) and a secretary (Melanie Griffith) that goes south when duty turns him cold and pushes her into dangerous, behind-the-lines intelligence work. Liam Neeson plays the gentleman Nazi unwittingly providing Griffith with cover as domestic help. The best parts of the film ...

The Patriot

The Patriot

»rank: 5378

starring: Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Joely Richardson, Jason Isaacs, Chris Cooper
directed by: Roland Emmerich

0ur opinion: :Aimed directly at a mainstream audience, The Patriot qualifies as respectable entertainment, but anyone expecting a definitive drama about the American Revolution should look elsewhere. Rising above the blatant crowd pleasing of Stargate, lndependence Day, and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich crafts a marvelous re-creation of South Carolina in the late 177Os (aided immeasurably by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel), and Robert Rodat's screenplay offers the same balance of epic scale and emotional urgency that ...

Return to Me

Return to Me

»rank: 7753

starring: Chris Barnes (IX), James Belushi, William Bronder, Dick Cusack, Minnie Driver

0ur opinion: :Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) and Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver) have very little in common. Granted, they both live in Chicago and they're both a bit lovelorn, but that's about it. Still, fate has something in mind for these two somewhat-depressed souls (a construction worker and budding artist, respectively), who've both recently had brushes with death--he's a recent widower, she's just recovered from a heart transplant--and are a little more serious than their ...

Anne Frank Remembered

Anne Frank Remembered

»rank: 12643

starring: Anne Frank, Kenneth Branagh, Peter van Pels, Joely Richardson, Bep Voskuijl
directed by: Jon Blair

0ur opinion: :Anne Frank has not been forgotten. More than 25 million copies of her diary--which has been turned into a play and a movie--have been sold. This intense, richly detailed documentary paints a broad portrait of Anne. Documentaries are a dime a dozen, but few stories are as truly powerful, as sincerely moving and poignant as Anne's. Director Jon Blair does a phenomenal job with this carefully detailed, thoughtful, emotional film (his previous ...

Sister My Sister

»rank: 1002

starring: Julie Walters, Joely Richardson, Jodhi May, Sophie Thursfield, Amelda Brown
directed by: Nancy Meckler

0ur opinion: :Christine (Joely Richardson) and Lea (Jodhi May) are sisters who were separated at a young age. Through Christine's clever machinations, they have been reunited by working as maids for a very proper lady and her bored and restless daughter. When the already passionate bond between the sisters becomes sexual, it sets up a series of events that lead to tragedy. Set in 1932 France, this film is supposedly based on a true ...

King Ralph

King Ralph

»rank: 25296

starring: John Goodman, Peter O'Toole, John Hurt, Camille Coduri, Richard Griffiths
directed by: David S. Ward

0ur opinion: :David Ward made his reputation on his original screenplay to The Sting, but his career as a director has been built on lightweight comedies filled with generous spirit and slight aspirations. King Ralph delivers on that level. After a freak accident kills every immediate member of the British royal family, a search of the royal bloodline uncovers an unlikely candidate: portly Vegas lounge singer John Goodman. How will this gauche, exuberant, red-blooded ...

Event Horizon

directed by: Paul W.S. Anderson

0ur opinion: :Lawrence Fishburne and Sam Neill head up a strong cast as the reluctant leaders of a rescue mission sent to find out just what in the hell (literally) happened to the crew of a long-vanished experimental spacecraft in this dark and thundering descent of a horror film. Although this extremely stylish haunted spaceship movie may be guilty of ripping off half a dozen better films (including Don't Look Now, Hellraiser, and especially ...

When a business builds up its capital through earnings, part of the earnings disappear to taxes if not reinvested in the business before the end of the tax year, says CPA George Saenz.

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- The "no vacancy" signs outside hotels, sunburned families packing boardwalk amusement rides and thousands of students working in surf shops and souvenir concessions along the avenues suggest that the beach economy is booming this summer.

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
