Jane Eyre
»rank: 5973
0ur opinion: :Made two years after Citizen Kane, this 1943 version of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre sure looks like star 0rson Welles muscled his way behind the camera much of the time. (ln fact, costar Joan Fontaine--who plays the title character--has maintained that Welles methodically did just that every day on the set.) Not that the film's official director was a hack: Robert Stevenson, who later had a busy career at Disney making numerous live-action hits for the studio, such as Mary Poppins, gets the credit. But there's no ...

Enchanted Cottage
»rank: 1535
0ur opinion: :A homely maid and a scarred ex-Gl meet at the cottage where she works and where he was to spend his honeymoon prior to his accident. The two develop a bond and agree to marry, more out of loneliness than love. The romantic spirit of the cottage, however, overtakes them. They soon begin to look beautiful to each other, but no one else. Written by Daniel Bubbeo

The Man Who Knew Too Much
»rank: 14857
0ur opinion: essential video:Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 remake of his own 1934 spy thriller is an exciting event in its own right, with several justifiably famous sequences. James Stewart and Doris Day play American tourists who discover more than they wanted to know about an assassination plot. When their son is kidnapped to keep them quiet, they are caught between concern for him and the terrible secret they hold. When asked about the difference between this version of the story and the one he made 22 years earlier, Hitchcock ...

Invaders From Mars
»rank: 17649
0ur opinion: :The cold-war paranoia of the McCarthy era had America in its grip when the original lnvaders from Mars was released in 1953, and this atmospheric, highly influential science fiction film--the first of its kind to be filmed in color--was perfectly in tune with the mood of its time. Jimmy Hunt plays the quintessential American boy of the post-war years--a freckle-faced kid named David who's curious, alert, and possibly prone to elaborate flights of fancy. Then, during a midnight thunderstorm, he witnesses the landing of a flying saucer ...
