Osmosis Jones (Clam)

Osmosis Jones (Clam)

»rank: 9762

starring: Chris Rock, Laurence Fishburne, David Hyde Pierce, Brandy Norwood, William Shatner
directed by: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly

0ur opinion: :After the stiff attempts at realism in many recent features, it's a treat to see broad cartoon-style animation on the big screen in 0smosis Jones, a spoof of cop movies set inside the human body. The title character (voice by Chris Rock) is a street-smart white blood cell, working for Frank's immune system. He and Drix (David Hyde Pierce), an over-the-counter cold capsule, are reluctant partners fighting what appears to be a minor infection. ...

There's Something About Mary (Special Edition)

»rank: 246

starring: Cameron Diaz, Matt Dillon, Ben Stiller, Lee Evans, Chris Elliott
directed by: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly

0ur opinion: :There's Something About Mary is one of the funniest movies in years, recalling the days of the Zucker-Abraham-Zucker movies, in which (often tasteless) gags were piled on at a fierce rate. The difference is that cowriters and codirectors Bobby and Peter Farrelly have also crafted a credible story line and even tossed in some genuine emotional content. The Farrelly brothers' first two movies, Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin, had some moments of uproarious raunch, ...

Shallow Hal

Shallow Hal

»rank: 4583

starring: Gwyneth Paltrow, Jack Black, Jason Alexander, Joe Viterelli, Rene Kirby
directed by: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly

0ur opinion: :Coming from the creators of Dumb & Dumber and There's Something About Mary, the sensitivity of Shallow Hal seems like a minor miracle. The codirecting Farrelly brothers haven't forsaken their lowbrow inclinations, but this clever romantic fantasy offers unexpected substance with the same comedic effrontery that made the Farrellys famous. Their antihero is Hal (Jack Black), whose fixation on beautiful women is reversed (after an encounter with self-help guru Tony Robbins) so he can ...

Dumb & Dumber

Dumb & Dumber

»rank: 244

starring: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Lauren Holly, Mike Starr, Karen Duffy
directed by: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly

0ur opinion: :Delivering exactly what its title promises, this celebration of stupidity was Jim Carrey's 1994 follow-up to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. The film pairs the rubber- faced wacky man with Jeff Daniels as the not-so-dynamic duo of Lloyd and Harry, dunderheads who come into the possession of a briefcase containing ransom money that is intended for Mob-connected kidnappers. Lauren Holly costars as the woman who lost the briefcase, and with whom Carrey ...

Kingpin

»rank: 11578

starring: Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, Vanessa Angel, Bill Murray, Chris Elliott
directed by: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly

0ur opinion: :The team behind Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary--two really stupid, gross-out films that worked and were quite funny--also made this really stupid, gross-out comedy that doesn't work and isn't funny at all. Woody Harrelson stars as a former bowling phenomenon with a hook for a hand, and Randy Quaid is an Amish farmer with a hidden talent for pins. The two join forces and get a sexy business partner (Vanessa Angel), ...

0ur opinion: :ln Me, Myself & lrene, Jim Carrey plays Charlie Baileygates, a cop for the best police force in the world (Rhode lsland). ln denial about his wife's affair, he's a nice guy who goes around trying to do the right thing but is taken advantage of every step of the way. lnstead of confronting people, he takes the abuse, balls it up, and hides it in the pit of his stomach. Stuck on You (2003)

»rank: 4829

starring: Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Eva Mendes, Wen Yann Shih, Pat Crawford Brown
directed by: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly, Mark Steilen

0ur opinion: :Stuck on You finds those fun-loving Farrelly brothers in a feel-good mood, delivering a tame, kind-hearted comedy that even your grandma could enjoy. That's a big change from the seminal 'hair gel' of There's Something About Mary, but the codirecting Farrellys have genuine affection for Bob and Walt (Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear), conjoined twins who are the owners and short-order cooks at a Martha's Vinyard burger joint. When amateur actor Walt decides he wants ...

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
