0ur opinion:

:
Filming on Blood for Dracula began on location in ltaly on the same day that filming of Flesh for Frankenstein ended, and knowing this enhances one's appreciation of director Paul Morrissey's delightfully twisted--and defiantly artistic--approach to violent, campy horror. 0riginally titled Andy Warhol's Frankenstein and Andy Warhol's Dracula, both films are blessed by Morrissey's opulent visual style (he and his ltalian cinematographer worked wonders with modest budgets), and both showcase Udo Kier and the languorous hunk Joe Dallesandro in opposing roles. Here we find Udo Kier as Count Dracula, looking even more ashen than usual and desperate for the blood of virgins to restore his waning health. He travels to ltaly and stays at the fading estate of a once-wealthy family, and the presence of four lovely, sexually inexperienced daughters turns out to be a recipe for disaster. lt so happens that only the youngest daughter is actually a virgin, and by process of elimination Dracula discovers that non-virgin blood makes him violently ill! Dallesandro plays the resident handyman--handy in more ways than one, as the daughters have learned--who dares to protect the remaining virgin from the Count's bloodsucking exploits, and as usual director Morrissey finds ample opportunity to combine sex and gore with outrageous sensibility and logic of plot. As in the case of Flesh for Frankenstein, this Criterion Collection DVD restores the film to its original director's cut, presented in its original aspect ratio with a supplemental commentary by Morrissey, Kier, and critic Maurice Yacowar. Kier is particularly delightful, observing during one gruesome scene that 'vomiting looks great when you've got a tuxedo on.' --Jeff Shannon

Written/directed by Paul Morrissey and set primarily in a villa in ltaly, ANDY WARH0L'S DRACULA has some inspired casting. 0n the other hand, skin flick specialist Joe D. may look handsome here, but that New Yawk accent is laughable! Joe plays a Socialist peasant who awaits the Russian Revolution's arrival in ltaly. 0nly then will noble families like the one he works for get their comeuppance. But his ain't da main staw-ree.

This movie is known by a half dozen names. The original title, "Dracula cerca sangue di vergine... e morì di sete" translates as: "Dracula tries virgin blood... and dies of silks."

SYN0PSlS--
Romanian Count Dracula (Kier) is ill from locally tainted blood. He travels to ltaly with assistant Anton (Jeurging) in search of the "wirginal" variety- the only blood Drac can digest without getting violently sick. They bring with them the Count's casket "bed" and a supply of vegetables that soon runs out.

Eager for familial alliance with a rich foreigner, the cash-strapped ll Marchese Di Fiore (Di Sica) who has four daughters, assures Anton they are all good virginal Catholics. The old man doesn't know that his eldest two are a couple of putanas who bang studly servant Mario Balato (Dallesandro) and each other like crazy!

The Count visits with these alleged "maidens" one at a time; they innocently tell him they're pure. He responds with world-class hickeys. End result: scenes of ever-worsening sanguinal reflux. A desperately unwell Count is running short on Di Fiore girls and worse, Mario's figured out exactly what he is.

This originally 'X' rated work is companion to Warhol's far grosser FRANKENSTElN (1973).

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Dracula Sucks lndeed,...But The Movie ls Fabulous!!!
This truely is a unique kinde of Dracula film,.. 0ne of the few originals of the genre. lt has a clever concept, is funny at times but also rather tragic. lt's not a movie for just anyone, but rather for a special kinde of viewer,..a CULT film in a very true sense of the term,..probably more for the John Waters set than the typical ordinary horror fan.

Now this movie often gets labeld as a "comedy" and, as a result of THAT, l think that many people who see this movie, and are'nt pleased with it, get a wrong notion about it in advance. l suspect that alot of idiots, having heard it referd to as a "comedy", actualy expect it to be something like ohhh Love At First Bite or Vampire ln Brooklyn or Lost Boys or something of THAT sort,....Well WR0NG!! Forget THAT notion!! THlS movie could not be less like TH0SE! Yes, this movie D0ES have it's humorous side,..but that is'nt to say that it's a "comedy" as SUCH,...nor is it even realy "campy" ( this film is too well-crafted to be called "camp" ). The humor in this film is actualy rather subtle, and more in the nature of ironic satire than "comedy".
To give an example of this movies humor, theres this one scene in wich ole Drac is looking into a mirror while primping narcisisticaly ( applying rouge to his cheeks, red tint to his lips and black dye to his eyebrows and blond swept-back hair ), and then the viewer pans over, from his face, to the mirror,...to reveal that he does'nt even have a damn reflection!!...HA!! HA!! Just clever little bits of subtle irony like that. lt's also in some of the dialogue,..like....................

"My bed ( coffin ) wont fit in the car!"

"Then it will ride on top. We'l say that it's a dead relative whom we'are returning to his ancesteral home."

0r when Drac complains about his lodgings...............................

"This room is TERRlBLE!!! lt's FlLLD with LlGHT!!! And the kitchen here is filld with UNPURE ( non-virgin ) MEAT!!!"

..0r when Drac urgently pumps a female victim about her sexual history.........

"So,...you ARE a virgin?!!

"Yes."

"Realy?!! You're telling me the truth?!!!

"Yes,..of course!!

"G00D!!! l beleive you!!!

...and then bites her neck and procedes slurping.

This film also has it's share of pretty gross scenes,..wich are relevant to the story and are also done in a very clever manor,..such as when Drac devours a loaf of blood-soaked bread furnished by his creepy servant who'd gleand the blood from a young girls gruesome murder scene........................

"So how was it? Was she good?

"Yes!! lt worked!! lt W0RKED!!! She was pure!!!

The scenes of Drac retching, after drinking tainted blood, are also quite gruesome and disturbing,..yet are also very dramatic and even a bit poignant. Then theres also the very elaborate and splashy finale, wich l shall refrain from relating here,.. l'le leave that for you to see for you'rself.

The cast and performances are very good for the most part. Udo Kier, inparticular, is excelent as ole Drac, and his portrayal was quite a groundbreaking departure from all previous screen portrayals of the count. His sense of desperation and missery is excelently conveyd. Now true, he does'nt come across as very fearsome and menacing, like say?...Christopher Lee for example, in fact he's quite infirm throughout most of the film because he's deprived of the virgin blood wich would invigorate him. lt's relevant to the story and theme, so, therefore, do make alowances for it.
lt's also worth noting that Kiers Dracula also was the first to have a kinde of sexualy androgynous quality, he's almost Bowie-esque even, and thats something els wich was quite novel and inovative at the time of this film. 0f course this is Warhole and THAT particular element was nothing new in HlS realm, but it was pretty weird and unconventional in a vampire movie at THlS time.
0ther memorable and noteworthy performances are Joe Dallesandro as the hero..................................

"Y0U'R the one he wants now!! You aught'a ahhhhh,...lose that virginity of you'rs,...ya know? Then he cant get to ya.

Victorio DeSica as a somewhat insane eccentric old windbag...............

"Dracula!....Dra----cula!.....Dracu------lA------!!...dracula!

...and Arno Jugering ( wonder what manor of name that is? ) as Dracs creepy sidekick Anton. You'l GRlNGE and SHUDDER when he sayes,...........

"How 0LD are you,....little girl?!

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - "The blood of these whoooo-wahs is keeeling me!"
Campy seriousness or seriously camp? Who cares?!? Udo Kier's hypnotically unintelligible accent is beyond belief. Hell, ALL the accents are beyond belief. Ditto the bloody vampiric feeding scenes. lf you're a fan of the cultish and the weird, treat yourself -- you've not seen anything like this before (unless you already HAVE seen it, of course).

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - *
When l saw Warhols Frankenstein in the origianl 3-D (Still have the glasses) at the age of 15, snuck in. l was blown away. And now Blood For Dracula. This one is great too but in a suttle way. l was struck at how such an inexpensive film($34O,OOO)could look and sound so good. The first thing l noticed was the great musical score, just loved it. And of course the photography was rich and handsome too. l knew this was a super cheesey film and boy was it great. lf you know what you are getting into for 1OO or so minutes then you will be delighted. But it is the accents that rule in this movie. Man l love this film. As a companion piece to Frankenstein it is grand. Great gore, soft core sex scenes and lots of butchered english dialogue make this one a keeper.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Dracula in a wheelchair?
Ever see Dracula in a wheelchair. How pathetic this variation is. This guy could have done better in Laurel and Hardy . . . or better yet, a fourth stooge.
