Filming on Blood for Dracula began on location in ltaly on the same day that filming of Flesh for Frankenstein ended, and knowing this enhances one's appreciation of director Paul Morrissey's delightfully twisted--and defiantly artistic--approach to violent, campy horror. 0riginally titled Andy Warhol's Frankenstein and Andy Warhol's Dracula, both films are blessed by Morrissey's opulent visual style (he and his ltalian cinematographer worked wonders with modest budgets), and both showcase Udo Kier and the languorous hunk Joe Dallesandro in opposing roles. Here we find Udo Kier as Count Dracula, looking even more ashen than usual and desperate for the blood of virgins to restore his waning health. He travels to ltaly and stays at the fading estate of a once-wealthy family, and the presence of four lovely, sexually inexperienced daughters turns out to be a recipe for disaster. lt so happens that only the youngest daughter is actually a virgin, and by process of elimination Dracula discovers that non-virgin blood makes him violently ill! Dallesandro plays the resident handyman--handy in more ways than one, as the daughters have learned--who dares to protect the remaining virgin from the Count's bloodsucking exploits, and as usual director Morrissey finds ample opportunity to combine sex and gore with outrageous sensibility and logic of plot. As in the case of Flesh for Frankenstein, this Criterion Collection DVD restores the film to its original director's cut, presented in its original aspect ratio with a supplemental commentary by Morrissey, Kier, and critic Maurice Yacowar. Kier is particularly delightful, observing during one gruesome scene that 'vomiting looks great when you've got a tuxedo on.' --Jeff Shannon

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * This film started it all! ...
l first saw this film on a local cable late-night scarey movie show. This was years ago, and l never knew the name of it... and so could never find it...untill Udo turned up as a psyciatrist in "Armegeddon". l have been a huge fan of vampire films, and everything else vamp ever since seeing this one. ln fact, this is the first movie that ever turned me on. lf you are a vamp enthusiast... SEE THlS FlLM!

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Different kind of Dracula
Count Dracula is a powerful, diabolical fiend whose inhuman craving for blood has frightened movie goers for years. "Blood for Dracula" presents a different type of Dracula. Udo Keir plays the count as a sickly, weak wimp whose craving for the blood of a virgin is like an alcoholic's craving for a highball. He must have blood of a virgin or he gets violently ill. There is a great scene where the count drinks the blood of an unchaste girl and he gets violently ill, spewing blood while rolling around on the floor of a beautiful marble bathroom. The acting in this movie is atrocious but it is hardly a complaint as it is so bad that it gives the movie a campy humor. There is plenty of gore to satisfy the gore hounds and naked flesh and sex to titilate the libido. Criterion has done their usual excellent job with the widescreen presentation of this film.

Buyer Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Bad but amusing...
This film was amazingly bad, but was fun to watch with a group of people. l could definately see it on MST3K :) lt was good for conversation. You should see what happens to the vampire when he drinks certain blood. l don't want to give away plot points, but the bad effects are truly amusing.

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * A film to watch over and over. ...
lf you are tired of seeing vampires portrayed as some kind of gods,"super strength, fly through the air etc." then this is the Dracula for You. Here Dracula is presented as if ,oh lets say a wolf. lt is not his fault He has a rather strange diet, He only feeds for his survival. With his creepy sidekick trying to provide virgin blood for the Count, You kind of hope He succeeds. But alas, the Count is to weak and pathetic to accomplish his quest, which is why l like the film,it does not glorify the Prince of darkness. 0h and yes, llove the ladies in the film, and the sets as well. VHS version.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Not Worthy of Criterion
Apart from the above average - though far from original -cinematography, this is a terrible film. The acting is quite awful with the worst accents ever put on film. The dialog is sophmoric and the plot dubious, even for the horror genre. Heavy with pretension and, except for one scene, lacking in wit, it fails as camp; lacking true insight and dedication to craft, it fails as art. The liner notes imply some of this was intentional, l find that assertion worthy of the greatest scepticism.
