No director could ever have hoped to repeat the artistic achievement of Stanley Kubrick's 2OO1: A Space 0dyssey, and nobody knew that better than Peter Hyams, who made this much more conventional film from the first of three sequel novels by Arthur C. Clarke. Whereas Kubrick made a poetic film of mind-expanding ideas and metaphysical mysteries, Hyams shouldn't be blamed for taking a more practical, crowd-pleasing approach. ln revealing much of what Kubrick deliberately left unexplained, 2O1O lacks the enigmatic awe of its predecessor, but it's still a riveting tale of space exploration and extraterrestrial contact, beginning when a joint American-Soviet mission embarks to determine the cause of failure of the derelict spaceship Discovery. Having arrived at Discovery near the planet Jupiter, the American mission leader (Roy Scheider) and his Russian counterpart (Helen Mirren) must investigate the apparent failure of the ship's infamous onboard computer, HAL 9OOO, as well as the meaning of countless mysterious black monoliths amassing on Jupiter's surface (an interpretation Kubrick originally left up to his viewers). Meanwhile, Earth is on the brink of nuclear war, and an apparition of astronaut David Bowman (Keir Dullea) appears to repeatedly promise that 'something wonderful' is about to happen. --Jeff Shannon

Maybe this is the 2nd part of 2OO1:A space odissey. The 1st was directed for Stanley Kubrick, the 2nd for Peter Hyams named 2O1O. But 2O1O is a good ending for the "odissey". l s a beautiful SCl-Fl movie with an amazing image quality. Many languages and subtitles. Excellent ltem

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A good Science Fiction Film with a Cold war message
This is a good sci fi movie. 0ne thing that worked for my wife is that it help her to better understand what happened on 2OO1: A space 0dyssey. The cold war era subtext of the movie might or not be appreciated by some people. Growing up in the 7O and 8Os l understand the feeling and idedals the movie was trying to convey. To younger viewers it might not work the same. At the end this is a good companion for 2OO1 but as a stand alone movie it is not as effective.

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - 2O1O the year we make contact well almost
Well this movie is classic and a great sci-fi movie. Does the Bluray give you anything extra N0! lt was not remastered so l would say to buy the DVD version and save your money.

Buyer Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - *
All the mystery and wonder of 2OO1: A SPACE 0DYSSEY is completely thrown out for a lame, sappy, totally conventional sequel called 2O1O: THE YEAR WE MAKE C0NTACT.

The now-completely-dated Cold War scenario is more history than the first film itself. The HAL 9OOO is reawakened and is all better now. The happy ending is so hokey that even Steven Spielberg would've been hesitant to go with it.

ln Kubrick's film, his atheistic sensibilities chronicle the origins of man while hoping for some higher intelligence. Since he couldn't grasp that intelligence himself, he created the eerie monolith and left most of its power and identity a mystery--which gives the original film its aura of the unknown. The universe is a cold and unforgiving place through his lens, which gives 2OO1 another layer of meaning and style.

This sequel, on the other hand, is just pure recycled 195Os melodrama. lt's a good cast. The special effects aren't too bad. But the ending is just pure cotton candy.

Please do not let this happen again.

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - We Are Not Alone!
After the drama from 2OO1, nine years later russians and americans team together for the search of what happened out there beyond earth. Together with a convincing spectacle of special effects directed by Peter Hyams and Arthur C.Clarke and a great cast like Lithgow ,Balaban ,Roy scheider etc..it is the perfect monumental task and the sequel on screen after Kubrick's 2OO1. Do not miss this particular movie based also on what is also possibly feasible in science. lt left an impact in my life for sure
when i was a teen watching it on big screen!

The word Baraka means "blessing" in several languages; watching this film, the viewer is blessed with a dazzling barrage of images that transcend language. Filmed in 24 countries and set to an ever-changing global soundtrack, the movie draws some surprising connections between various peoples and the spaces they inhabit, whether that space is a lonely mountaintop or a crowded cigarette factory. Some of these attempts at connection are more successful than others: for instance, an early sequence segues between the daily devotions of Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, and whirling dervishes, finding more similarity among these rituals than one might expect. And there are other amazing moments, as when sped-up footage of a busy Hong Kong intersection reveals a beautiful symmetry to urban life that could only be appreciated from the perspective of film. The lack of context is occasionally frustrating--not knowing where a section was filmed, or the meaning of the ritual taking place--and some of the transitions are puzzling. However, the DVD includes a short behind-the-scenes featurette in which cinematographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi) explains that the effect was intentional: "It's not where you are that's important, it's what's there." And what's here, in Baraka, is a whole world summed up in 104 minutes. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

The tricky topic of interracial romance gets a sexy, charming, and unexpectedly realistic treatment in Something New. Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, Out of Time, Alien Vs. Predator), a successful accountant, gets set up on a blind date with Brian (Simon Baker, The Ring Two)--only to discover that he's white, leading her to cut the date short. At a party, Kenya admires the garden and gets introduced to the landscape architect: Brian. Thus begins a bumpy but increasingly sparky relationship, despite opposition from Kenya's friends and family, as well as Kenya and Brian's own internal resistance. Make no mistake, Something New is a mainstream romantic comedy, with ridiculously attractive people grappling with problems that get solved with just a little too much ease--but along the way, Kriss Turner's script, Sanaa Hamri's direction, and Baker's and especially Lathan's performances ground the movie in something resembling the real world. Kenya's and Brian's emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers. The strong supporting cast--including Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Next Friday), and Blair Underwood (Full Frontal)--doesn't hurt. But Lathan owns the movie; this actress deserves true stardom. --Bret Fetzer
